APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Extended to December 14. All applications must be postmarked Dec 14 or earlier.

The Association for Women Journalists - Chicago established this college scholarship in 2007 to recognize an outstanding woman journalism student pursuing a career in alternative journalism.
Examples of non-traditional journalism include community newspapers, Web sites, video and radio podcasts, ethnic media, femini-media, or lesbian and gay media. Applicants can demonstrate
their commitment to this field through clips, recommendations or past internships.  

CRITERIA FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must:
* Permanently reside or attend college in the Chicago region.
*Be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate journalism major pursuing a career in alternative journalism or be a working journalist who is continuing her education.
* Be scheduled to graduate no earlier than May 2010.
* Have a grade point average between 3.0 and 4.0.
* Agree that, if they win, they will write a "Where I Am Now" article updating AWJ about their career path one year after the awarding of the scholarship.


HOW TO APPLY

Applicants must submit the following:
* Completed scholarship application.
* One letter of recommendation from a journalism faculty member.
* Unofficial copy of your college transcript.
* Essay of no more than 500 words about what attracts the applicant to a career in alternative journalism and a description of key career objectives.
* A single clip in any form. If more than one work sample is submitted, the committee will randomly select the one for consideration.

The scholarship winner(s) will be notified in January and announced at the annual AWJ meeting in January 2010. Winners need not be present, but all applicants are welcome to attend.
