Joy Darrow Memorial Scholarship Winners

2010 - Alyssa Eisenstein

Northwestern's Alyssa Eisenstein is particularly passionate about Africa, where she has spent extensive time studying, working and traveling. During her sophomore year at Northwestern she studied global health at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. She also spent a summer in Uganda working for the United Nations World Food Programme, filming relief and recovery operations in the war-torn region of northern Uganda. This past spring, she completed Medill’s Journalism Residency in Johannesburg, South Africa. For ETV’s “3rd Degree” weekly investigative program, she co-produced an investigation of police brutality in a small town in South Africa. After college she hopes to join the Peace Corps and work either in international reporting or for an international organization.

2009 - Allison Horton

Allison Horton is studying interactive storytelling/new media at the Medill School of Journalism. She has created a website to provide African-American news and content in the Chicago area. In addition to weekly concerts, plays or comedy shows, the site highlights interviews with entertainers. She also writes for a local paper, “The Citizen.” Allison received her Joy at AWJ's 2009 annual meeting.

2008 - Connie Lee

The recipient of the first Joy Darrow Memorial Scholarship is Connie Lee, a  student at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

"She has proven to be an industrious reporter unafraid of complex issues.
Like Joy Darrow, she cares about international issues. Her honors thesis is focused on the human rights and legal implications of the Myanmar government crackdown on its Buddhist monks. Her studies have also taken her to China. She writes: “The conflict between the old and  new is evermore present, and I believe this understanding of an  Eastern culture and my Chinese language skills allows me to approach reporting from a unique perspective.”

Edited from Tracy Baim’s comments about Connie, upon announcing the Darrow winner at AWJ’s annual meeting in January 2008.
