Application for 2010 AWJ-Chicago Scholarship
Scholarships for Women Journalism Majors
Award: $1,500 plus a one-year student membership in AWJ
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Extended to December 14, 2009. All applications must be postmarked Dec 14 or earlier.
The Association for Women Journalists in Chicago established this college scholarship award in 2003 to recognize the achievements of outstanding women journalism students in the Chicago region. Students who have demonstrated an interest in issues important to women are especially encouraged to apply.
CRITERIA FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must:
* Permanently reside or attend college in the Chicago region.
* Be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate journalism major concentrating in broadcast, newspaper, magazine, online, photography or graphics.
* Be scheduled to graduate not earlier than May 2010.
* Have a grade point average between 3.0 and 4.0.
* Agree that, if they win, they will write a "Where I Am Now" article updating AWJ about their career path one year after the awarding of the scholarship.
HOW TO APPLY
Applicants must submit the following:
* Completed scholarship application.
* One letter of recommendation from a journalism faculty member.
* Unofficial copy of your college transcript.
* Essay of no more than 500 words answering the question "Why do you want to be a journalist?"
* Short essay of no more than 50 words addressing what you'll do with the scholarship money if you are selected.
* A single clip in any form. If more than one work sample is submitted, the committee will randomly select the one for consideration.
The scholarship winners will be notified in January and their names will be announced at the AWJ Annual Meeting in January 2010. Winners need not be present, but all applicants are welcome to attend.
