The Association for Women Journalists-Chicago awarded its first scholarship in 2005. The program continues to recognize and support the achievements of outstanding women journalism students. It honors talented women studying journalism in the Chicago region. Students who have demonstrated an interest in issues important to women are especially encouraged to apply. Applications are taken between October 1 and December 1 annually.

AWJ also administers the Joy Darrow Memorial Scholarship.

We are grateful to the donors, judges, faculty and volunteers who backs our efforts to support promising new journalists.

I'm still so honored and grateful for the AWJ Scholarship it was really unexpected, but it was an amazing opportunity. — Sumi Somaskanda, AWJ Scholar 2005
